Overview

Civirilast is a small molecule neutrophil elastase inhibitor developed by the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is primarily being investigated for the treatment of acute lung injury (ALI) associated with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Neutrophil elastase is a key serine protease released by activated neutrophils that contributes to pulmonary tissue damage, degradation of the extracellular matrix, and increased vascular permeability in severe inflammatory conditions. By inhibiting this enzyme, civirilast aims to mitigate lung injury and improve respiratory function in patients with acute respiratory distress. The drug is typically administered as a sodium salt via intravenous infusion.
