Overview

Civirilast sodium (SIMM-H-007) is a small molecule neutrophil elastase inhibitor developed by the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM) and Shanghai Haitian Pharmaceutical. It is currently in clinical development for the treatment of acute lung injury (ALI), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Neutrophil elastase is a serine protease that, when excessively released by activated neutrophils, causes significant damage to the alveolar-capillary barrier and promotes a cascade of inflammatory cytokines. By selectively inhibiting this enzyme, civirilast sodium aims to protect lung tissue and improve respiratory function in critically ill patients. The drug is administered via continuous intravenous infusion.
