CJ-003 is a small molecule nanocrystal formulation of abiraterone acetate, developed by Guangdong Xijie Pharmaceutical for the treatment of prostate cancer. As a Class 2 improved new drug in China, it utilizes nanocrystal technology to enhance the pharmacokinetic profile of the active ingredient, potentially improving bioavailability and reducing the significant food effect associated with conventional abiraterone acetate formulations. Abiraterone acetate acts as a selective inhibitor of the enzyme CYP17 (17α-hydroxylase/C17,20-lyase), which is essential for androgen biosynthesis in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostate tumor tissue. By blocking this pathway, the drug reduces serum testosterone levels to castrate levels, thereby inhibiting the growth of androgen-sensitive prostate cancer cells. CJ-003 is currently in Phase 1 clinical development.
