Clade C gp140 is a recombinant protein immunogen derived from the envelope glycoprotein (Env) of HIV-1 subtype (clade) C. It consists of the extracellular portions of the viral envelope proteins gp120 and part of gp41, engineered to form a soluble trimer that mimics the native structure on the virus surface. Clade C is globally significant as it represents the most prevalent HIV-1 subtype in regions such as southern Africa and India. The primary mechanism involves eliciting an immune response—specifically neutralizing antibodies—against diverse strains of HIV-1 by presenting conserved epitopes in their native-like conformation. Clade C gp140 has been evaluated as a vaccine antigen in preclinical models and early-phase clinical trials for its ability to induce binding and neutralizing antibody responses against multiple HIV subtypes[2][3]. It is typically administered with adjuvants or as part of heterologous prime/boost regimens.
