Overview

Claramine is a synthetic steroid polyamine that exhibits blood-brain barrier permeability. It functions as a selective inhibitor of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), an enzyme known to negatively regulate insulin signaling. By inhibiting PTP1B, Claramine activates key components of the insulin signaling pathway, including insulin receptor-β (IRβ), Akt, and GSK3β. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its ability to restore glycemic control in diabetic mice, suppress feeding, and promote weight loss. Additionally, Claramine has been shown to regulate lipid membranes and protect cells from various biological toxins, such as misfolded protein oligomers, suggesting potential neuroprotective properties. It is currently available for research use only.
