Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SDP-015 (also known as ANX-015) is an intravenous emulsion formulation of the macrolide antibiotic clarithromycin, originally developed by Biokeys and later by Adventrx Pharmaceuticals. It was designed to provide a parenteral delivery option for clarithromycin, which was primarily available in oral forms in the United States. The emulsion technology was specifically intended to reduce the incidence of injection-site phlebitis and venous irritation, which are common complications associated with the intravenous administration of macrolide antibiotics. Clarithromycin exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, specifically the 23S rRNA, thereby inhibiting RNA-dependent protein synthesis. SDP-015 was investigated for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and other moderate-to-severe bacterial infections requiring parenteral therapy, but its development was discontinued following corporate restructuring and shifts in the developer's therapeutic focus.
