clascoterone

Clascoterone is a novel, first-in-class topical androgen receptor antagonist used for the treatment of acne vulgaris in patients aged 12 years and older. It works by competitively inhibiting androgen receptors in the skin, particularly within sebaceous glands and dermal papilla cells, thereby blocking the effects of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This inhibition reduces sebum production and inflammation—key factors in acne pathogenesis. Clascoterone is also under investigation for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss). The drug exhibits high local activity with minimal systemic absorption or side effects. It was approved by the FDA in August 2020 as a topical cream for acne[1][4][5][6].
