Overview

Classic Induction (CI) is a standardized pharmacological regimen used for the induction of general anesthesia and facilitation of endotracheal intubation. As defined in clinical studies by The University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, the protocol involves the sequential intravenous administration of lidocaine (1 mg/kg), an opioid such as fentanyl (1-2 mcg/kg), a sedative-hypnotic agent like propofol (1-2 mg/kg), and a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, specifically rocuronium (0.6 mg/kg). This combination is designed to provide analgesia, loss of consciousness, and muscle relaxation to ensure optimal conditions for tracheal intubation while maintaining hemodynamic stability. The regimen serves as a control arm in trials evaluating alternative induction techniques like Modified Time Principle Induction (MTPI).
