Clavmer

Clavmer is an oral antibacterial combination product marketed by Merlion Lifescience, consisting of the semi-synthetic beta-lactam antibiotic amoxicillin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) involved in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, which leads to cell wall instability and subsequent osmotic lysis. Clavulanic acid, a structural analogue of penicillins, acts as a suicide inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamases, enzymes that typically confer resistance by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring of amoxicillin. By irreversibly binding to these enzymes, clavulanic acid protects amoxicillin from degradation, thereby extending its spectrum of activity to include beta-lactamase-producing strains of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Clavmer is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin and soft tissues.
