Clearfil Protect Bond

Clearfil Protect Bond (also known as Clearfil SE Protect) is a two-step, self-etching dental adhesive system developed by Kuraray Noritake Dental. It is primarily used in restorative dentistry to bond composite resins to dentin and enamel. The system is distinguished by the inclusion of the antibacterial monomer 12-methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide (MDPB) in the primer, which provides a 'cavity cleansing' effect by killing residual bacteria on contact without leaching from the bond layer. Additionally, it contains the 10-MDP monomer for high-strength chemical bonding to hydroxyapatite and releases fluoride to enhance the acid resistance of the surrounding tooth structure. Clinical trials, such as the practice-based trial conducted at Radboud University Medical Center, evaluate its effectiveness in reducing secondary caries and improving the longevity of dental restorations compared to standard non-antibacterial adhesives.
