Overview

Clemastine is a first-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies and the common cold such as sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, itching, and hives. It acts primarily as a histamine H1 receptor antagonist by competitively blocking histamine at H1-receptor sites in the body[1][2][3][5]. This reduces allergic symptoms mediated by histamine release. Clemastine also exhibits anticholinergic properties and sedative side effects typical of first-generation antihistamines[5]. In addition to its established use for allergic conditions (allergic rhinitis/hay fever; urticaria), recent research has explored its potential for promoting remyelination in neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis by enhancing oligodendrocyte differentiation and maturation[6][8]. Clemastine was patented in 1960 and is FDA-approved for allergy-related indications[5][8].
