Overview
*Clinacanthus nutans*, commonly known as payayor or Sabah snake grass, is a medicinal herb native to Southeast Asia and a staple of traditional Thai medicine. It is recognized for its potent anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant properties, which are attributed to bioactive compounds such as C-glycosyl flavones, sulfur-containing glucosides, and phytosterols. In clinical practice, payayor extracts are typically formulated into topical gels or mouthwashes. These formulations are used to manage inflammatory mucosal and skin conditions, including herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections (such as cold sores and shingles), aphthous stomatitis, and radiation-induced mucositis (RIOM) in patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancers. The therapeutic effect is mediated through the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6, as well as direct interference with viral replication.
