Overview

A topical combination antibiotic medication containing clindamycin and sodium sulfacetamide. Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, exerting a bacteriostatic effect. Sodium sulfacetamide is a sulfonamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial synthesis of folic acid by blocking the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, which is essential for bacterial growth and reproduction. This combination targets multiple pathogenic factors in skin conditions, particularly acne vulgaris, by reducing populations of acne-causing bacteria such as *Cutibacterium acnes* (formerly *Propionibacterium acnes*) and *Staphylococcus* species. The combination is often formulated with tretinoin to provide complementary mechanisms targeting bacterial proliferation, inflammation, and comedone formation. This medication is typically available in concentrations of clindamycin 1% and sodium sulfacetamide 5% in various topical formulations including gels, lotions, and creams.
