Clobetasone is a synthetic corticosteroid used primarily as a topical medication to treat skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. It is also sometimes used for certain ophthalmologic conditions like dry eyes. As a moderate-potency steroid (less potent than clobetasol), it works by binding to cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors in dermal and intradermal cells. This action induces inhibitory proteins that decrease the activity of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, kinins, histamine, and liposomal enzymes. The result is reduced swelling (edema), redness (erythema), itching (pruritus), and irritation at the site of application[1][3][8]. Clobetasone may be combined with other agents such as antibiotics or antifungals in some formulations (e.g., Trimovate)[1].
