Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Clometocillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class. It is a semisynthetic penicillin, structurally related to other penicillins such as cloxacillin and methicillin. Like other beta-lactam antibiotics, it acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death in susceptible bacteria. Clometocillin has been used primarily for the treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, particularly staphylococci and streptococci that are resistant to standard penicillins due to beta-lactamase production. Its use is largely historical or regional; it may not be widely available or marketed in many countries today.
