Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) primarily indicated for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults and children aged 10 years and older. It acts mainly as a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor, increasing serotonin levels in the brain to help maintain mental balance. Clomipramine also inhibits norepinephrine reuptake through its active metabolite, desmethylclomipramine, and exhibits antagonistic activity at several serotonin receptor subtypes. Additional pharmacological effects include alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blockade and sodium channel inhibition, which may contribute to its analgesic properties in neuropathic pain.
