Clomocycline is a synthetic tetracycline antibiotic and a methylol derivative of chlortetracycline. It has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and is used to treat various infections, including acne, urinary tract infections, gum disease (periodontitis), sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, as well as for prophylaxis against Bacillus anthracis (anthrax). Clomocycline is also effective against Yersinia pestis (plague), malaria-causing organisms, Lyme disease, brucellosis, bartonellosis, and cholera. Its mechanism of action involves binding reversibly to the 30S ribosomal subunit in bacteria. This prevents aminoacyl-tRNA from attaching to the A site of the ribosome-mRNA complex during translation, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and bacterial growth. Resistance can develop via efflux pumps or ribosomal protection proteins[1][2][3][6].
