Clonazepam is a highly potent benzodiazepine used primarily as an anticonvulsant and anxiolytic. Clonazepam acts by binding to the benzodiazepine site on GABA_A_ receptors in the central nervous system, enhancing the inhibitory effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This increases chloride ion influx into neurons, resulting in synaptic inhibition and CNS depression. The drug has a rapid onset of action (within 1 hour orally) with effects lasting 6–12 hours.
