CLonE-specific CAR T cells are an autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy developed by the Heidelberg University Hospital (Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg) for the treatment of relapsed or refractory immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis. These CAR T cells are engineered to express a receptor targeting the B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), a protein highly expressed on the surface of the malignant plasma cell clone responsible for the production of amyloidogenic light chains. By specifically targeting and eliminating these plasma cells, the therapy aims to halt the production of toxic light chains and facilitate organ recovery. The "CLonE" designation is used specifically within the context of the clinical program for AL amyloidosis, distinguishing it from other BCMA-targeted therapies developed by the same institution.
