Overview

Clonidine is a centrally acting alpha-2 adrenergic agonist and small molecule antihypertensive agent. It lowers blood pressure by stimulating alpha-2 adrenoceptors in the brainstem, which decreases sympathetic outflow from the central nervous system. This results in reduced heart rate and relaxation of blood vessels. Clonidine is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), either alone or with other medications. Extended-release formulations are also approved for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children 6 years and older by affecting brain regions involved in attention and impulsivity. Additional uses include management of severe cancer pain (as an adjunct), withdrawal symptoms from opioids or other substances, migraine prevention, diagnosis of pheochromocytoma, Tourette's syndrome, menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, and certain pain syndromes[1][2][5][6].
