Overview

Clorazepate is a benzodiazepine medication primarily used for the treatment of anxiety disorders, partial seizures, and symptoms associated with acute alcohol withdrawal. It functions as a prodrug, undergoing rapid decarboxylation in the stomach to form its active metabolite, nordiazepam (desmethyldiazepam). This active metabolite then exerts its therapeutic effects by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system, resulting in anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative, hypnotic, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties. It is administered orally.
