Clorsulon is a small molecule anthelmintic drug belonging to the benzenesulfonamide family, used primarily in veterinary medicine for the treatment of liver fluke infections (notably Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica) in cattle. It is often administered as a monotherapy or in combination with ivermectin for broader antiparasitic coverage. Clorsulon's mechanism of action involves selective inhibition of key enzymes in the glycolytic pathway—specifically phosphoglycerate kinase and phosphoglyceromutase—in parasitic flukes, thereby blocking their primary energy source under anaerobic conditions and leading to parasite death[1][5][6]. The drug is rapidly absorbed after subcutaneous injection and has demonstrated efficacy against adult liver flukes[1][4]. Clorsulon was originally developed by Merck.
