Drug intelligence / Profile preview
clostridia cluster XIVa strain relative blautia sp. 001304935, live is a specific, clonal bacterial strain belonging to the Clostridia Cluster XIVa and the *Blautia* genus. It is a key component of **VE303**, a defined bacterial consortium developed by Vedanta Biosciences for the prevention of recurrent *Clostridioides difficile* infection (rCDI). As a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) constituent, this strain works synergistically with seven other commensal strains to restore the gut microbiota's ecological balance. Its primary mechanism involves providing colonization resistance against *C. difficile* by competing for essential nutrients and producing inhibitory metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which lower luminal pH and directly suppress pathogen growth. VE303 is currently in late-stage clinical development following successful Phase 2 results, representing a standardized alternative to fecal microbiota transplantation.
