Overview

This combination probiotic therapy consists of *Clostridium butyricum* and *Lactobacillus* species (most commonly *Lactobacillus acidophilus*). *Clostridium butyricum* is a gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium that produces butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) essential for the health of colonocytes and the maintenance of the intestinal epithelial barrier. *Lactobacillus* species are lactic acid-producing bacteria that lower intestinal pH, thereby inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria and stimulating local mucosal immunity. Together, these organisms work synergistically to restore gut microbiota balance, enhance the intestinal barrier, and prevent the translocation of bacteria into the bloodstream. This is particularly relevant for immunocompromised patients, such as those undergoing chemotherapy for head and neck cancers, where intestinal damage can lead to repeated sepsis.
