Clostridium butyricum ATCC 19398 is a specific strain of a Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic bacterium. It functions as a probiotic by producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), most notably butyrate, through the fermentation of dietary fibers in the colon. Butyrate is a critical energy source for colonic epithelial cells and is integral to maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier and modulating immune responses. This strain is the subject of preclinical research for various conditions. Studies in animal models and cell cultures have demonstrated its potential to treat inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis, severe acute pancreatitis, and endometritis by reducing inflammation and strengthening the gut barrier. [24, 33, 38] Additionally, in vitro and in vivo research suggests it may have anti-cancer properties, particularly in colorectal cancer, by inducing cancer cell apoptosis and inhibiting proliferation, partly through modulation of the Wnt/β-catenin and METTL3 signaling pathways. [20, 21, 26, 29] However, some preclinical research in models of necrotizing enterocolitis has yielded conflicting results, with one study suggesting it may exacerbate the condition. [23, 35]
