Overview

MiyaBM is a pharmaceutical-grade probiotic preparation containing the *Clostridium butyricum* MIYAIRI 588 strain. Developed by Miyarisan Pharmaceutical, it is a gram-positive, obligate anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium that produces high concentrations of butyric acid (a short-chain fatty acid) in the intestinal tract. While traditionally used in Japan to treat dysbiosis-related conditions like diarrhea and enteritis, it is increasingly studied as an adjunctive oncomicrobiotic to enhance the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors. By modulating the gut microbiome and increasing systemic butyrate levels, it is thought to promote an immunostimulatory environment, potentially improving responses to therapies such as PD-1/PD-L1 and CTLA-4 inhibitors in cancers like hepatocellular carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma.
