Overview

Clostridium difficile immune whey (CDIW) is a bovine-derived biologic developed by Novatreat Ltd for the treatment of recurrent Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile infection (CDI) and associated diarrhea. It consists of a whey protein concentrate enriched with immunoglobulins, particularly secretory IgA (sIgA), derived from the colostrum and milk of cows immunized with an inactivated C. difficile vaccine containing toxins and whole cells. The product acts as a passive immunotherapy, where the bovine antibodies neutralize C. difficile Toxin A and Toxin B and inhibit bacterial colonization in the gastrointestinal tract. Development reached a Phase II randomized, double-blind trial in Finland comparing CDIW to metronidazole, but the study was terminated prematurely due to the bankruptcy of the developer, Novatreat Ltd.
