Clostridium difficile toxoids A and B are inactivated (non-toxic) forms of the two major toxins produced by Clostridium difficile—Toxin A (an enterotoxin) and Toxin B (a cytotoxin). These purified antigens are generated by treating the native toxins with formaldehyde to eliminate toxicity while preserving antigenicity[1][4][5]. The primary use of these toxoids is as immunogens for raising antibodies or as components in vaccine development against C. difficile infection[1][4][6]. They may also be used in diagnostic assays to detect immune responses or toxin exposure[4][5]. The mechanism of action for vaccines based on these antigens is to stimulate an immune response that neutralizes the pathogenic effects of Toxins A and B, thereby preventing or reducing disease severity caused by C. difficile infection[6].
