ClōSYS is an over-the-counter oral health rinse primarily used as a mouthwash to eliminate oral malodor (bad breath), cleanse the oral cavity, and aid in the prevention of dental cavities. Its key active ingredient is stabilized chlorine dioxide (marketed as Cloralstan), which is a buffered sodium chlorite solution. When exposed to amino acids in saliva or acidic conditions produced by bacteria in biofilms, the stabilized chlorine dioxide is activated and acts as an antimicrobial agent—killing dental plaque-causing bacteria and neutralizing volatile sulfur compounds that contribute to bad breath and soft tissue damage. Some formulations also contain sodium fluoride for anticavity protection. The product is alcohol-free, pH-balanced, non-irritating even for sensitive mouths, and available with or without added flavoring agents such as peppermint oil[1][3][4][5][6][7].
