Overview

Clotalyst is a chitosan-based hemostatic agent designed to rapidly control moderate to severe bleeding. Developed by HemCon Medical Technologies, it utilizes the mucoadhesive properties of chitosan, a naturally occurring polysaccharide derived from crustacean shells. When applied to a wound, the positively charged chitosan molecules attract and bind with negatively charged red blood cells, leading to rapid erythrocyte aggregation and the formation of a physical plug that seals the injury site. This mechanism of action is independent of the body's physiological coagulation cascade, making it effective even in patients with coagulopathies or those on anticoagulant therapy. It is primarily indicated for external temporary control of severely bleeding wounds in trauma and surgical settings.
