Overview

Clotrimazole + gentamicin is a topical combination drug consisting of clotrimazole, an antifungal agent, and gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Clotrimazole acts by inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis in fungal cell membranes through antagonism of lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase (CYP51), leading to increased membrane permeability and inhibition of fungal growth[2][6]. Gentamicin exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit in bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and causing bacterial cell death[5][6]. This combination is primarily used for the treatment of mixed skin infections caused by susceptible fungi (such as dermatophytes or Candida) and bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus or Pseudomonas aeruginosa). It is commonly formulated as a topical cream or ointment for use in both human and veterinary medicine.
