Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BioVagin is a combination drug product containing the antifungal agent clotrimazole and the sulfonamide antibacterial agent sulfisoxazole. It is formulated as a vaginal cream or vaginal suppository (ovule) for the treatment of vulvovaginal infections, including vulvovaginal candidiasis (moniliasis) caused by *Candida albicans*, trichomoniasis caused by *Trichomonas vaginalis*, and other mixed bacterial infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms. Clotrimazole acts by inhibiting fungal lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase, thereby disrupting ergosterol synthesis and compromising cell membrane integrity. Sulfisoxazole acts as a competitive inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), blocking bacterial folic acid synthesis.
