Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Clotrimazole Vaginal Spray is a topical antifungal formulation developed by Lincoln Pharmaceuticals as part of its New Drug Delivery System (NDDS) portfolio. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis (vaginal yeast infections). The active ingredient, clotrimazole, is a synthetic imidazole derivative that exerts its antifungal activity by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase (CYP51). This inhibition prevents the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. The resulting depletion of ergosterol and accumulation of methylated sterol precursors lead to structural and functional damage to the fungal cell membrane, increasing permeability and causing cell death. The spray delivery system is designed to offer a more hygienic and convenient application method compared to traditional vaginal creams or tablets.
