CLS12311 is an innovative cell therapy being developed for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). It consists of autologous red blood cells chemically coupled with twelve peptides representing major target antigens in MS. The treatment works by inducing antigen-specific immune tolerance. After reinfusion, the coupled blood cells undergo natural cell death in the body and are presented to the immune system in a tolerogenic manner in the liver and spleen. This process aims to correct the misguided autoimmune response that causes MS by preventing the body from attacking its own brain and spinal cord tissue, without affecting normal protective immune functions. The therapy is administered as an intravenous infusion, with approximately 450 milliliters of the patient's blood being taken, processed ex vivo, and then reinfused. It is being developed by Cellerys and Novartis.
