Overview

CLT-006 is an investigational regenerative medicine product consisting of corneal endothelial-like cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Developed by the Japanese biotech company Cellusion, it is designed to treat bullous keratopathy, a severe condition characterized by the irreversible loss of corneal endothelial cells, which leads to corneal edema and vision loss. Unlike traditional corneal transplants that rely on a limited supply of donor tissue, CLT-006 offers a potentially unlimited supply of therapeutic cells. The treatment involves the injection of these iPSC-derived cells into the anterior chamber of the eye (intracameral injection). Once administered, the cells adhere to the posterior surface of the cornea and restore the essential pump and barrier functions required to maintain corneal transparency and thickness, thereby improving visual acuity and reducing the need for invasive keratoplasty.
