CM-978 is a potent, orally active small molecule STAT3 inhibitor developed by Centro Atlántico del Medicamento (CEAMED). Derived from natural products found in the Canary Islands' marine biodiversity, specifically marine algae, it targets the IL-6/JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway. This pathway is a critical driver in aggressive malignancies such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and is also implicated in the hyper-inflammatory cytokine storm associated with severe COVID-19 cases. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that CM-978 is significantly more potent than natural inhibitors like silibinin and exhibits efficacy comparable to established JAK inhibitors like ruxolitinib. The compound belongs to a broader class of fused quinonic compounds developed under the 'Statinib' program.
