Overview

CM-Sal is a nanoparticle-encapsulated formulation of salinomycin, a polyether ionophore antibiotic. Developed by Imunon (formerly Celsion Corporation), CM-Sal is designed to selectively target and eliminate cancer stem cells (CSCs), which are a subpopulation of tumor cells often resistant to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Salinomycin functions as a potassium ionophore, facilitating the transport of potassium ions across biological membranes, which disrupts the mitochondrial membrane potential and increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), ultimately inducing apoptosis in CSCs. Additionally, salinomycin has been shown to inhibit the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway, a key regulator of CSC self-renewal and maintenance. The CM-Sal formulation utilizes a proprietary carboxymethyl-based nanoparticle delivery system to overcome the poor aqueous solubility of salinomycin and to enhance its delivery to tumor tissues while minimizing systemic toxicity.
