Overview

CMV pp65 Specific T Cells is an investigational adoptive cell therapy developed by H. Kim Lyerly and colleagues at Duke University for the treatment and prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in patients following allogeneic stem cell transplantation. The therapy consists of donor-derived T lymphocytes (both CD4+ and CD8+ subsets) that are expanded ex vivo to specifically recognize the CMV pp65 antigen, a major immunodominant protein of the virus. Once infused into the recipient, these antigen-specific T cells provide cellular immunity to control viral replication and prevent CMV-related disease in immunocompromised individuals. The therapy was evaluated in a Phase 1 pilot study to assess its safety and feasibility in post-transplant patients with malignant disease who are at high risk for CMV complications.
