Overview

CMV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CMV-CTL) are an adoptive cellular immunotherapy developed by University Hospital Birmingham for the prevention and treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Following SCT, patients are severely immunocompromised and at high risk for CMV reactivation, which can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. This therapy involves the infusion of T cells specifically primed to recognize and eliminate CMV-infected cells, thereby restoring the recipient's cellular immunity against the virus. In clinical trials, these cells are typically selected from the stem cell donor or a third-party bank to provide immediate antiviral protection while the patient's own immune system recovers.
