This CMV vaccine, developed by the Hadassah Medical Organization, is an experimental peptide-based vaccine designed for the prevention and treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease, specifically in the context of stem cell transplantation. The therapeutic strategy involves the immunization of healthy stem cell donors with CMV-specific peptides combined with an adjuvant or using donor-derived antigen-presenting cells (APCs) pulsed with these peptides. This process is intended to induce the generation of CMV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) within the donor. These sensitized donor lymphocytes are subsequently collected and administered to the transplant recipient as adoptive immunotherapy. This approach aims to provide or restore CMV-specific immunity in patients at high risk, such as seronegative recipients or those with documented CMV viremia or disease following non-myeloablative or myeloablative stem cell transplantation.
