CNK-UT cells are an investigational, allogeneic (universal) cell therapy consisting of T-cells engineered to express a chimeric natural killer (NK) receptor. Developed by Fujian Medical University, this therapy is designed to treat patients with steroid-refractory, steroid-resistant, or steroid-dependent graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The "universal" nature of the cells suggests they are modified to be used as an off-the-shelf product, likely through gene-editing techniques that minimize the risk of the therapy causing GVHD or being rejected by the recipient's immune system. The chimeric NK receptor enables the T-cells to recognize and eliminate the specific immune cell populations driving the GVHD pathology. The drug is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 investigator-initiated trial.
