Overview

CNTX-2022 is a high-concentration (40%) topical lidocaine gel formulation developed by Centrexion Therapeutics for the management of acute pain associated with herpes zoster (shingles). Lidocaine is a well-established local anesthetic that functions by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes. By inhibiting the influx of sodium ions, lidocaine prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby providing analgesic effects. CNTX-2022 is specifically designed to deliver a high dose of lidocaine through the skin to reach the underlying peripheral nerves affected by the varicella-zoster virus, aiming to provide more effective pain relief than lower-concentration topical treatments like patches or standard gels. The formulation is intended to provide rapid and deep penetration to target the peripheral nerve endings responsible for acute shingles pain.
