Overview

**Co-amoxiclav + clarithromycin** is a combination of two antibiotics, used together primarily for the treatment of bacterial infections when broad-spectrum antibiotic coverage is required. Co-amoxiclav consists of amoxicillin (a penicillin-class beta-lactam antibiotic) and clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor), while clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic. Amoxicillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamases that degrade amoxicillin, and clarithromycin inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria. The combination is indicated in clinical settings such as respiratory tract infections, and is used off-label or per protocol in some complex infections, especially when atypical or resistant pathogens are suspected or when initial empirical therapy is warranted. The drugs are often manufactured and marketed separately but can be co-prescribed as part of a multi-drug regimen.
