Overview

Co-Phenylcaine Neo is a taste-masked and flavored reformulation of Co-Phenylcaine Forte, an intranasal spray developed by Curtin University. It contains the same active ingredients as Co-Phenylcaine Forte—lidocaine hydrochloride (5%, a local anesthetic) and phenylephrine hydrochloride (0.5%, a vasoconstrictor/decongestant)—but incorporates a flavoring agent and a taste-masking agent to improve patient tolerability. Lidocaine hydrochloride acts as a local anesthetic by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, preventing the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. Phenylephrine hydrochloride is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist that induces local vasoconstriction, reducing mucosal edema and bleeding. Co-Phenylcaine Neo is indicated for ear, nose, and throat (ENT) conditions requiring nasopharyngeal examination, specifically to prepare the nasal mucosa prior to nasendoscopy procedures. It has been evaluated in a Phase 3 randomized, blinded, crossover equivalence trial in Australian ENT patients undergoing nasendoscopy, comparing it to the standard Co-Phenylcaine Forte intranasal spray to assess procedural discomfort, pain, taste, and aftertaste.
