Coagulation factor IX (recombinant) is a biosynthetic protein produced using recombinant DNA technology to replicate the naturally occurring human coagulation Factor IX. It is indicated for the treatment, control, prevention, and reduction of bleeding episodes in patients with hemophilia B (congenital Factor IX deficiency or Christmas disease), as well as for preventing bleeding during surgery in these patients. The drug works by replacing missing or deficient Factor IX to restore normal blood clotting through its role in the coagulation cascade. Recombinant forms are not derived from human plasma but are produced in genetically engineered cell lines such as Chinese hamster ovary cells[1][2][8]. This approach reduces risks associated with pathogen transmission compared to plasma-derived products and is considered standard of care for hemophilia B management[5]. Major brand names include Benefix (Pfizer), Idelvion (CSL Behring), Ixinity (Medexus Pharma), and Rixubis (Takeda)[1][2][3].
