Coal tar is a thick black or brown liquid derived as a byproduct from the distillation of coal during coke and gas production. It is a complex mixture containing phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and heterocyclic compounds. In medicine it is used topically to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis by reducing itching and scaling through anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects. Coal tar also has mild antibacterial properties. It is available in various formulations including creams, ointments, lotions/shampoos for topical use[1][3][4][5]. Long-term or high-dose exposure carries risks due to its carcinogenic PAH content; however short-term medical use on skin has not been conclusively linked to increased cancer risk[6]. Industrially it is used for chemical feedstock and road surfacing but these uses are restricted in some regions due to toxicity concerns[1][7].
