Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Coal tar is a complex mixture of phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and heterocyclic compounds derived from the carbonization of coal. It is a long-standing topical treatment for inflammatory skin disorders, particularly psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. Its therapeutic effects are attributed to its ability to normalize keratinization and reduce inflammation. Recent research suggests its primary molecular mechanism involves the activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), which induces the expression of genes involved in skin barrier function and detoxification, while also inhibiting the pro-inflammatory Th17 pathway. Seaford Pharmaceuticals markets this as an over-the-counter (OTC) shampoo for scalp conditions.
