Protar K (also marketed as Protar-K Solution or Protar-K Lotion) is a topical combination therapy developed by Percos for the treatment of scalp conditions such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and scalp psoriasis. It is formulated as a topical solution or lotion containing 4% w/v coal tar and 2% w/v ketoconazole. Ketoconazole is an imidazole antifungal agent that inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes, thereby stopping the growth of dandruff-causing fungi like Malassezia. Coal tar is a keratolytic and keratoplastic agent that slows down rapid skin cell turnover, facilitates the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp's top layer, and relieves itching and flaking.
