Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Coal tar solution is a topical medication primarily used to treat symptoms of plaque psoriasis, including itching, scaling, flaking, and redness. Historically used for centuries, a novel over-the-counter formulation, marketed as Psorent by NeoStrata Co., was developed to overcome the traditional cosmetic and convenience drawbacks of traditional coal tar preparations. This specific solution contains 15% liquor carbonis distillate, which is equivalent to 2.3% coal tar. It has demonstrated significantly greater and more persistent improvement in moderate chronic plaque psoriasis compared to prescription calcipotriol cream in clinical trials, while maintaining comparable cosmetic acceptability and convenience.
