Overview

Coated Vicryl (Polyglactin 910) is a synthetic, absorbable, braided suture material developed by Ethicon (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson). It is composed of a copolymer made from 90% glycolide and 10% L-lactide. The suture is coated with a mixture of equal parts of a copolymer of glycolide and lactide (Polyglactin 370) and calcium stearate, which facilitates smooth passage through tissue and enhances handling characteristics. Coated Vicryl is widely used for general soft tissue approximation and ligation. It is absorbed by the body through slow hydrolysis, typically maintaining approximately 75% of its tensile strength at two weeks and being completely absorbed within 56 to 70 days. In the context of clinical trials sponsored by ClinAmygate, Coated Vicryl serves as a standard-of-care control to evaluate the efficacy of antibacterial-coated sutures (such as Vicryl Plus) in reducing port site infections during laparoscopic procedures.
